If you’re thinking of becoming an insurance broker (or already are one) then chances are you have a lot of questions like “What is RIBO?” and “How do I get my RIBO license?”
How can I get into insurance broker in Canada?
RIBO stands for Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario. It is a self-regulatory organization that regulates the licensing, professional competence, ethical conduct and insurance related financial obligations of general insurance brokers in Ontario. There are 3 levels of RIBO licenses. The first is the RIBO Entry Level license which lets you work as a broker but only while under supervision of someone with a RIBO 2 or higher licence. If you want to have your own brokerage then you need a RIBO Management License. To get that you need to pass the RIBO Unrestricted Management exam.
Brokers who let their RIBO licence lapse this year can still avoid a mandatory suspension by filing their renewal by September 30. “We’ve seen 94 per cent of our brokers renew online this year, which is much better than in previous years,” says Ballantyne. “But we will still follow-up with those who haven’t renewed.”
