Navigating the Seas: Nautical Flags Collection
Forty flags comprise the complete set of international maritime signal flags—one for each letter of the alphabet, 10 numerals, and four special flags called substitutes. They form an internationally recognized system for communicating at sea, used to denote things such as points of the compass, geographical signals, names of boats, and positions of latitude and longitude.
They are arranged to spell words, such as A for anchor and W for a medical emergency, and are raised on the same side of the ship. They can be combined with other signals to convey more complex messages. The International Code of Signals explains the meaning of individual symbols and their combinations. In addition to letters and numbers nautical signal flags also share information about the condition of a boat, its identity, and its intention.
