Women in Tech is not just about statistics. It is an opportunity for students to display who they are and to demonstrate their technical savvy through examples from their careers. According to the Women in Technology article by PWC, among all the students participating in this survey, only boys chose to participate in sciences, while more girls chose to participate in humanities, including social science, history, and psychology. This is particularly true in college and at universities.
Why is it that girls are statistically less likely than males to pursue a tech career? According to PWC’s statistics, it has to do with biology, which reveals that females have a weaker interest in science than males. Females, according to this study, are also less likely to be interested in engineering, math, and computer science. But then again, when they do try hard, they are still considered very bright and capable. And females who do get into IT jobs are usually considered as a specialist in their particular field, which is a little bit different from other majors.
Although there may be some biases in the tech industry, most people don’t realize that it is much larger than what it seems. There are many roles that are held by women in the IT industry, which includes professional support, executive level positions, designers, consultants, marketers, software engineers, network analysts, and more. So even if there are some stereotypes associated with these jobs, most experts say that these gender gaps will not persist forever. In fact, the GVA (girls in technology industry) figures show that there has been a significant change over the past few years, where there has been a 20% increase in female professionals.
