Heysnus (such-NOO’s) is smokeless tobacco that is placed between the upper lip and gum for extended periods. It is not chewed and is not fermented, as is dry snuff. It is sold primarily in Sweden and Norway but is also marketed and available for purchase internationally, mostly where there are Scandinavian tourist attractions.
Compared to smoking, snus has lower levels of nicotine, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. It is a safer alternative and has been associated with reduced anxiety, stress and depression and increased positive mood and quality of life among snus users. [59] In addition, snus use may be associated with decreased oral mucosal lesions and an absence of the development of leukoplakia (pre-malignant or cancerous lesions in the mouth)[58].
From Tradition to Trend: The Evolution of Snus Culture
Moist snus is prepared from air-dried tobacco that is shredded, mixed with salt, an alkalizing agent (typically, E500), and food-grade aromas. It is then heated and then filled into pouches. In Sweden, where snus is regulated as a food product, all ingredients are listed on the package.
Snus is a popular alternative to cigarettes and has been credited with saving the lives of many Swedish smokers. However, snus is not without risks. Its success as a substitution for cigarettes may be partially due to its MAO inhibiting properties, but it is also possible that it is successful because it reduces negative effects of smoking and has a better taste than chewing or dipping. In addition, some snus products contain high levels of potentially toxic substances such as nitrosamines and heavy metals.
